The department provides higher education in the bachelor's, engineering and doctoral study program "Weapon systems, weapons and their parts".

It deals with research projects of applied research for the benefit of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic, including projects within the NATO/STO panels, the Research and Development Grant Agency of the Slovak Republic.

The department's main areas of research are:

• Research of simulation methods in the diagnosis and modernization of military equipment introduced in the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic;

• Application of intelligent materials and new technologies in special engineering;

• Analysis of vibration and noise load of combat equipment and evaluation of properties of special materials;

• Research into the possibilities of increasing the protection of armored objects against the effect of dynamic impact and explosion;

• Analysis of the possibilities of reducing the significant symptoms of military equipment and weapons in the infrared region of the spectrum;

• Tribodiagnostics of oils and lubricants.
